Rain Isabella Astano: Meet the Dubai-Based Filipina Teen Making Waves in Junior Pickleball
Seven months. That’s all it took Rain Isabella Astano to go from picking up a pickleball paddle for the first time to reaching the quarterfinals of an international tournament. For most athletes, that timeline would sound implausible. For Rain, it’s simply the latest chapter in a career that’s been moving quickly from the start.
The Filipino teenager, based in Dubai, made her international pickleball debut at the Asia Pickleball Junior Open 2026 in Thailand, held from 31 July to 3 August. Competing against some of the region’s strongest junior talent, she reached the quarterfinals in both of her categories, finishing eighth in Girls’ Under-16 Doubles and sixth in the Girls’ Under-14 Division. For a first outing on the international stage, those results represent a genuinely rare start.
Rain currently competes as a Selkirk Emerging Junior Pro and is already regarded as one of the UAE’s most promising young players—a reputation built in a fraction of the time most athletes need to establish themselves.
From Tennis Courts to Pickleball Courts
Astano’s sporting story didn’t begin with pickleball at all. She first picked up a tennis racquet at the age of eight, working her way up to a career-high UAE junior ranking of 37th in the Under-12 category. It was a solid foundation, built through years on the tennis court, but her path shifted the moment she tried pickleball for the first time.
That first game, played with her family in Dubai, appears to have settled the matter almost instantly. Astano took to the sport with a speed that’s since become the defining feature of her rise, swapping tennis for pickleball and, within seven months, translating that switch into international quarterfinal results against seasoned junior competition.
What Comes Next for Astano
Thailand won’t be the last stop on Astano’s calendar this year. She’s set to compete at the Pickleball World Cup in Da Nang, Vietnam, running from 30 August to 3 September. It’s not a small event to be added to a young résumé, either. The Da Nang tournament is recognised as one of the largest individual international pickleball events in the world, drawing more than 2,665 entries across upwards of 200 categories spanning Pro, Amateur, Junior, Wheelchair, KOL, and Entrepreneur divisions. The young Filipina will line up once again in the Junior Division, this time carrying real international experience into a field considerably larger than the one she faced in Thailand.
For an athlete who only switched sports seven months ago, the scale of what’s ahead might seem daunting. Given how quickly she adapted to pickleball in the first place, though, it looks rather more like the natural next step than a leap. Rain Isabella Astano’s rise has, so far, been defined by exactly that kind of rapid adaptation—and Da Nang offers her the biggest stage yet to prove it wasn’t a fluke.
