Malaysia’s Picklers Show Out at Selangor ASICS Pickleball Open

The Selangor ASICS Pickleball Open was a smashing success.

A total of 267 players joined the two-day tournament held on the 15th and 16th of February at the DINK2 courts in Petaling Jaya. It showcased a team event covering men’s doubles open, men’s doubles (combined age 90+), mixed doubles (combined age 80+), and women’s doubles (combined age 70+). The tournament also had men’s and women’s novice singles categories.

Connie Chan and Danny Tan were the big winners in the singles category. Connie topped the women’s division and was joined by Maxine Teoh Kah Wai (second place) and Lim Ju-En (third place) in the podium. Yong Sze Jing finished fourth. Danny, on the other hand, ruled the men’s division, with Lee Jia An earning silver and Jaden Tham nabbing bronze. Ritchie Lee Zhe Zhin placed fourth.

The Team Event, meanwhile, was ruled by 002 East-West, followed by DINKiT at second place and MYP SJ at third place. Dink Dongs finished fourth. Each team featured six to eight players who competed in the different subcategories—men’s doubles open, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and women’s doubles.

LinkedUp Asia Sdn. Bhd., the leading pickleball tournament organiser in Malaysia, co-organised the Selangor ASICS Pickleball Open with the State Government of Selangor and ASICS Malaysia. It is part of a series of tournaments planned by ASICS Malaysia to showcase Malaysia’s elite pickleball talent and provide a platform to motivate grassroots players to get involved with the sport.

“Pickleball represents a unique opportunity for Malaysia to shine on multiple fronts. As a sport that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, it perfectly embodies our ‘Sound Mind, Sound Body’ philosophy, promoting not just physical fitness but mental well-being through community engagement and active lifestyles,” said Boon Tib, Country Manager of ASICS Malaysia. “Partnering with the state of Selangor for the Selangor ASICS Pickleball Open allows us to inspire elite athletes to reach their potential while encouraging grassroots players to embrace this inclusive sport. Together, we’re creating a platform where community, competition, and wellness converge to elevate pickleball locally and internationally.”

For Melina Hwang, Founder of LinkedUp Asia, the turnout to the Selangor ASICS Pickleball Open proves yet again how big the sport is getting in Malaysia, with Selangor seemingly emerging as the country’s pickleball hotspot.

“We were confident that the Selangor ASICS Pickleball Open will be well-received, but we were still overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support we got,” Mel said. “It just speaks to the ever-growing popularity of pickleball here in Malaysia, particularly in Selangor, and the undeniable passion of larger pickleball community in the country. We hope to build on the success of this tournament and hold bigger and better competitions moving forward.”

With their expertise and proven track record of holding successful tournaments, expect LinkedUp Asia to continue being at the forefront of the pickleball boom in Malaysia. And one way they will do so is by organising more tournaments like the Selangor ASICS Pickleball Open.
