While hundreds of new paddles are certified each year, far less attention is paid to those that fail to meet specifications or are later flagged for investigation. That changed this week, with three models surfacing on the governing body’s compliance list.
Facolos Elite X Removed, Others Under Investigation
The Facolos Pro Series Elite X, once part of the Approved Paddle List, has now been formally delisted after testing revealed its surface exceeded allowable roughness limits. Facolos admitted that the production version differed from the sample originally submitted for certification.
Two other paddles—the Speedup Tide 14S and Proton Series Three Peacock—remain under investigation but continue to hold approved status for now. Both probes have been ongoing since late May.
Surface Grit at the Centre of Concerns
Excessive grit appears to be the common thread in these cases. USA Pickleball has historically purchased paddles from third-party retailers to ensure production models match the standards of their certified prototypes. The recent findings suggest that some manufacturers may be struggling to maintain consistency between test samples and retail versions.
A Shift in Oversight
So far in 2026, around 250 new paddles have been added to the Approved Paddle List—a notable decline compared to previous years. The reduced volume, coupled with these investigations, points to a more rigorous compliance environment.
USA Pickleball emphasised in a statement that transparency and fairness remain central to its certification process, reiterating that any paddle seeking or maintaining approval must meet all applicable thresholds.
