Asian Pickleball Association Teams Up With DUPR to Bring Consistent Player Ratings Across Asia

Ask any tournament organiser in Asia about their biggest headache, and “balancing the draw” is likely to come up. A new partnership aims to take care of that. The Asian Pickleball Association (APA) has teamed up with DUPR to bring greater consistency to player ratings across the continent.

The collaboration was unveiled at the Global Pickleball Summit 2026 in Hong Kong. The goals are to help players compete at appropriate skill levels and to let tournament organisers create more balanced match-ups.

The division of labour is straightforward. DUPR will assess playing ability, while APA rankings will reflect players’ competitive standing within Asia. The initiative is also expected to improve tournament organisation and to create clearer pathways for Asian players to compete internationally.

Who’s Who

The Asian Pickleball Association is a governing body for the sport in Asia, affiliated with the Global Pickleball Federation (GPF). It is dedicated to advancing pickleball in the entire Asian continent and offers a unique platform for enthusiasts, players, and national governing bodies in Asia to unite under a common umbrella.

Notable, when DUPR first announced a partnership with the APA and Pickleball League Asia Pvt Ltd (PLAPL) in December 2023, it described the APA as a soon-to-be-launched body, so the group has been in DUPR’s orbit for a while.

DUPR, which stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating, is a global rating system and technology platform. Rather than rating players by tournament results alone, it assigns each player a number based on their match results, and it’s meant to work across ages, genders and locations. DUPR is the official rating of a long list of organisations, including USA Pickleball, the GPF, the United Pickleball Association (UPA), the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) and Major League Pickleball (MLP).

Part of a Bigger Push in Asia

This isn’t DUPR’s first move in the region. This year alone, the platform opened a regional headquarters in Asia and has been lining up local partners, including the Philippine Pickleball Federation, PickleHub Vietnam, Sport Connect in Vietnam, Asia Pickleball TV and Baseline. It was also the ranking platform for the first Asia Pickleball Games back in 2023 in Taichung, Taiwan, and is the official rating partner of this year’s Heineken Pickleball World Cup in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Against that backdrop, the APA tie-up looks like another piece of a larger strategy, as DUPR works with local platforms to give players and organisers a single, trusted rating.

What It Could Mean

Pickleball in Asia has grown quickly, but ratings have often been fragmented across federations, clubs and apps. A shared, DUPR-based measure of ability, combined with APA rankings for competitive standing, could help in a few ways:

  • Fairer draws: Organisers get a common yardstick for dividing players into skill brackets, which should mean fewer lopsided matches.
  • A clearer path up: Players moving from local events to regional and international tournaments would carry a recognised rating with them, the same one used by the pro tours.
  • Better data: With one system in use, comparing players across countries becomes easier, which is useful for team selection and national rankings.

How it plays out will depend on details that haven’t been spelled out yet, such as which tournaments will adopt the system, how APA rankings will be calculated, and when it will start. For a sport that is expanding as fast as pickleball is in Asia, though, a shared language for skill level is a welcome step.
