New Testing Era Begins: USA Pickleball Set to Introduce Spin Rate Limite Starting October

Pickleball’s equipment landscape is about to change—and manufacturers have a clear deadline to prepare for it.

USA Pickleball has announced the introduction of a spin rate test for paddle certification, with a maximum limit of 2,100 RPM taking effect from 1 October 2026. The move replaces the previous upper thresholds for surface roughness and coefficient of friction, which will be retained as measurements of record rather than certification limits. From October onwards, any paddle submitted for certification must achieve a measured spin rate at or below 2,100 RPM to receive USA Pickleball approval.

The testing system was developed in collaboration with Image Systems, an industry leader in high-speed motion and video analysis technology. It uses a dual-camera setup that improves measurement accuracy and repeatability compared to single-camera methods, alongside proprietary software that automatically calculates spin rate in RPM—removing the need for manual frame counting and significantly reducing operator variability. The result is an objective, repeatable process designed to produce consistent evaluations across all submissions.

Manufacturers do not have to wait until October to engage with the new standard. Effective immediately, voluntary submissions are open, allowing companies to put their paddles through the complete certification process including the spin rate test. However, paddles that meet the new standard will not appear on the USA Pickleball Approved Paddle List before 1 October 2026. Until that date, paddles meeting the existing surface roughness and coefficient of friction requirements can still be certified and added to the Approved Paddle List under the current standards.

The official Spin Rate Test Standard Operating Procedure will be distributed on 15 July 2026.

In response to feedback from manufacturers, the Image Systems camera and software platform used to conduct the spin rate test will be made commercially available. The instrumented test ball developed specifically for this system, produced in partnership with Franklin, will also be available for purchase. Manufacturers seeking information on equipment availability can contact the USA Pickleball Equipment Evaluation Committee at eecadmin@usapickleball.org.

USA Pickleball said it will monitor the implementation and impact of the changes over the next 12 months, reaffirming its commitment to objective equipment standards that support fair competition, innovation, and the sport’s continued growth.

The clock is running. October is the line.
