Da Nang knows how to put on a show, and the opening of the Heineken Pickleball World Cup 2026 proved just that. On Wednesday evening, the city welcomed more than 5,000 athletes from 65 countries and territories with a spectacle that was equal parts sport, culture, and celebration.
The Tien Son Sports Arena was the stage, beginning with a parade of athletes that set the tone for a week of competition. What followed was a drum performance titled The Road to Glory, delivered by over 1,000 officers, soldiers, and students from the People’s Police Academy. Nguyen Manh Hung, chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee, captured the mood perfectly. He reminded everyone that the true value of the tournament lies not only in its scale but in the gathering of people from different backgrounds, languages, and cultures. “Sports bring people who have never met closer together. On the playing field, geographical distances are reduced and language differences are no longer barriers,” he said.
The Guinness World Records team was also on hand to mark the occasion, recognising the Heineken Pickleball World Cup as the largest of its kind, with athletes registered from 78 countries and territories. It was a milestone moment for a sport still carving out its global identity.
Beyond the matches, the organisers have built an event that stretches far wider. Cultural exchanges, training programmes, and even a World Market are part of the week’s schedule. The idea is simple: pickleball as a bridge not just between athletes, but between communities, businesses, and cultures.
For Da Nang, this is about more than sport. The city sees events like this as part of its event economy, a way to boost tourism and strengthen people‑to‑people diplomacy. Hung made no secret of that ambition, saying the city hopes to become a hub connecting knowledge, culture, sports, technology, and business in the region.
