JOOLA Launches The R4LLY, Pickleball’s First Ever Top-Down Shoe
JOOLA has thrown its hat firmly into the footwear arena, unveiling what it claims is pickleball’s first truly top-down designed shoe: the FUNKSH1n_PB: R4LLY—or more simply known as The R4LLy. And if the ambition behind it is anything to go by, this is less a product launch and more a statement of intent.
For years, pickleball athletes have made do with adapted footwear—tennis, running, or cross-training shoes repurposed for a sport they were never specifically built to serve. JOOLA, however, is looking to change that narrative by engineering a shoe from the ground up, tailored to the demands of the modern game.
According to CEO Richard Lee, most so-called pickleball shoes fall short of that mark, relying on modified designs rather than sport-specific innovation. With the R4LLy, JOOLA aims to reset expectations, blending athlete insight with high-performance materials and specialist footwear engineering.
Crack Team with Ben Johns Designs The R4LLY
To bring this vision to life, JOOLA assembled a seasoned team with pedigrees spanning major global brands such as Nike, Reebok, and Adidas, alongside outdoor specialists like Columbia and Merrell. Led by figures including Gjermund Haugbro, Eric Lonsway, and Scott Portzline, the group worked closely with professional players throughout a rigorous 12-month development cycle, producing between 10 and 15 prototypes before arriving at the final build.

World No. 1 Ben Johns played a key role in shaping The R4LLY’s design, emphasising the importance of lateral movement, reduced weight, and a low-profile structure to support pickleball’s explosive, fast-twitch demands.
The result is a shoe engineered with precision. From abrasion-resistant Cordura® fabric and a dynamic fit sleeve to a carbon fibre shank and Qubit foam midsole, every element is designed to enhance stability, comfort, and responsiveness on court. A wider forefoot aids balance, while a reinforced toe cap protects against constant drag during kitchen play.
JOOLA has also ensured the R4LLy performs across all levels, with testing conducted by both elite competitors and recreational players in varied playing environments.
Exclusivity, however, is part of the appeal. The initial release of The R4LLY is limited to just 1,500 pairs worldwide, launching in a bold red, white, and black colourway. Subsequent drops will follow in April, before a full-scale release in May.
At USD $180, the R4LLY does not come cheap—but then again, it isn’t trying to blend in.
