Sibu Amateur Athletes Association Chair Offers Important Reminder to Keep Pickleball Momentum Going While Maintaining Harmony
Sibu Amateur Athletes Association chairman Dr Hii Sui Cheng was one of the guests of honour at the recently concluded Pickleball Fun Tournament 2026, held in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia. As he witnessed exciting pickleball action, he offered an important reminder for Malaysia’s growing pickleball community. The gist of his message: playing should not come at the expense of others’ well-being.
“While pickleball offers health, social and recreational benefits, these should not come at the expense of others’ well-being,” said Dr Cheng. “By ensuring suitable locations, reasonable operating hours, and open dialogue with the community, we can encourage the growth of the sport while maintaining harmony and quality of life for all.”
This reminder comes on the heels of numerous reports of residents complaining about what they claim is the overbearing and oftentimes distracting noise of the sport.
“According to media reports, residents in Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, have complained about the piercing ‘pop-pop’ sound of pickleball paddles when courts are situated directly in front of their homes,” he said. “In Ho Chi Minh City, the noise has reportedly frustrated residents, as games continue until midnight. Some have suffered sleepless nights, while others have found the situation unbearable and chosen to relocate.”
In ending, Dr Cheng, who is among the sponsors of the Pickleball Fun Tournament 2026 organised by the Sibu Great United Club and Sunnyou Sibu Pickleball Club, enjoined everyone to enjoy and promote sports, but at the same time be considerate of community needs.
As for the results of the Pickleball Fun Tournament 2026, Simon Ling and Thomas Goh bagged gold after defeating Andy Lau and Alex Lee in straight sets—11-7, 11-9. Ling and Goh each received RM150 and a medal, while Lau and Lee each took home RM100 and a medal. Kelvin Ting and Mervyn Ting copped bronze after beating Franco Ling and Nancy Lee, 21-16.
