The MB Hanoi Cup 2026 brackets have dropped — and it’s clear the PPA Tour Asia wasted no time serving up headline-grabbing clashes.
With the PPA Tour Asia curtain-raiser fast approaching, players now have their routes mapped out. Some draws look forgiving. Others are anything but.
Men’s Singles: A Field Stacked with Firepower
The top two seeds are on opposite sides, but neither Federico Staksrud nor Christian Alshon can expect a smooth passage to the final.
In Staksrud’s half, a likely quarter-final pits Connor Garnett against Jay Devilliers—the Sansan Fukuoka Open Triple Crown winner versus a seasoned PPA campaigner making his Asia debut. It’s the sort of matchup that could easily headline a final elsewhere. Lurking in the same section is Hong Kit Wong, who stormed through the Vibrant Linping Hangzhou Open in December, dismantling Garnett 11-4, 11-3 in the quarters en route to the final. If he finds that form again, Staksrud could be tested early.
The bottom half offers no respite. Christian Alshon shares his quarter with rising teenage talent Tama Shimabukuro, while Dylan Frazier—another Asia debutant—appears to have a cleaner route towards a projected semi-final with Alshon. That said, Asia has a knack for surprises, and this draw is deep enough to spring a few.
Women’s Singles: A Blockbuster Rematch Arrives Early
All eyes are on the quarter featuring Chao Yi Wang and Sahra Dennehy, setting the stage for a possible rematch of the Hangzhou Open final from just three months ago. Dennehy dominated that encounter to secure back-to-back Asia golds, but Wang will be eager to turn the tables. The fact this showdown could come before the semis only adds to its intrigue.
Top seed Kate Fahey hasn’t been handed any favours either. Her section is packed with 2025 Asia standouts, including three-time PPA Tour Asia Women’s Singles champion Yufei Long as a potential Round of 16 hurdle. The world No. 2 is unlikely to ease into her Asia debut.
Elsewhere, Kaitlyn Christian must first get past Judit Castillo in her quarter, while Brooke Buckner appears to have landed the most navigable path among the top seeds in her own Asia debut.
Women’s Doubles: Elite Duos Headline a Deep Draw
The top seed sees Anna Leigh Waters partnering Anna Bright, with Waters making her first appearance on the international stage. At the opposite end, Tyra Hurricane Black and Catherine Parenteau sit as the No. 2 pairing.
A potential final between these two teams would be a crowd-pleaser, but the route there is anything but straightforward. Brooke Buckner and Chao Yi Wang are positioned in the top seeds’ quarter, meaning Waters and Bright could face a stern examination as early as the last eight. Regular Asia contenders Ting Chieh Wei and Yufei Long, along with the Townsend/Dennehy pairing, further strengthen an already competitive field.
Men’s Doubles: Favourites Lead, but Threats Loom
Top billing goes to Gabriel Tardio and Ben Johns, who enter as clear No. 1 seeds. Johns came close last season in Asia, collecting silver and bronze, but a gold medal has so far remained out of reach. The No. 2 pairing of Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin looks the most likely to stand in their way.
The top half could deliver a quarter-final between Collin Johns and Len Yang against Dylan Frazier and Eric Oncins, with the former pairing carrying momentum from recent strong runs in the United States. Down below, Tyson McGuffin and Riley Newman are projected to meet Pham and Connor Garnett, while Jay Devilliers and Pablo Tellez could run into the second seeds.
Notably, McGuffin and Oncins claimed back-to-back Men’s Doubles gold at the MB Vietnam Cup and Panas Malaysia Cup last year. This time, they find themselves on opposite sides of the draw with different partners.
Mixed Doubles: Heavyweights on a Collision Course
The top seed pairs Anna Leigh Waters with Ben Johns, while Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin anchor the opposite side as No. 2.
If the seedings hold, the semi-finals promise fireworks. Waters and Johns could square off with Tyra Hurricane Black and Gabriel Tardio, while Bright and Patriquin may have to overcome Kaitlyn Christian and Christian Alshon for a place in the final.
