Upsets and a World Record: Recapping Historic MB Vietnam Cup and Looking Ahead

It’s been two weeks since the MB Vietnam Cup 2025 concluded, but the beautiful memories of those couple of days are still fresh in the minds of so many pickleball fans—especially those who were part of the 7,906 fans who packed the Tien Son Sport Centre in Da Nang on Championship Saturday.

That number, of course, is now in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest attendance at a pickleball event, proving the sport’s explosive growth knows no borders. The official announcement made during the closing ceremony in Da Nang by adjudicator Austin Johnson overturned the previous record that stood at 5,522. Da Nang didn’t just break it—they obliterated it.

Electric Atmosphere Creates Unforgettable Moment

For the players competing on Championship Saturday, the atmosphere was unlike anything they’d experienced before.

“I never thought pickleball would get this extreme and get to this point. In Asia, it’s crazy. Anything can happen,” said Phuc Huynh, who claimed Men’s Singles gold in front of the home crowd. “The stadium was packed, the crowd was electric.”

Men’s Doubles champion Eric Oncins echoed those sentiments, as the Brazilian star was clearly moved by the reception from Vietnamese fans.

“Honestly, this crowd was one of the most impressive crowds I’ve seen in pickleball in my whole life. You guys kept me going, gave me so much energy,” said Oncins, who left Asia with back-to-back doubles titles alongside Tyson McGuffin.

The Numbers Tell the Story

The 7,906 fans who filled Tien Son Sports Arena represented a massive 43% increase over the previous world record. The energy they brought fuelled five championship finals and created an atmosphere that had players and officials talking long after the last point was played.
PPA Tour Asia’s MB Vietnam Cup proved that the region’s appetite for world-class pickleball is real, and the record-breaking crowd in Da Nang has set a new benchmark for what’s possible in the sport.
